A little about me…
I have always had an eye for art and design, even at a very young age. It wasn’t until high school that I really started taking this hobby more seriously. For my elective I decided to do an art class and further my knowledge about the different aspects of art. My teacher, however, was a grumpy old man who seemed to hate life, but he loved art. I learned the way to get through to him was through our different projects and following along with his thoughts and suggestions. It was in his classroom that my love of art blossomed to more than just pencil sketching. I found I enjoyed pastels, watercolor, dot art and of course graphic design.
Fast forward to college and my love of art just kept growing. However my passion for teaching was what had won over. I was focused on getting my degree in Liberal Studies and going on to get my Teaching Credential. However, in my Junior year I would take another art class, this one being focused on how to teach art to children and boy did my creativity and drive for art take me through a loop. By the end of the class I was ready to change my major and focus more on being an art teacher. However, my dreams came to a halt when I realized most of my classes would not count and I would basically be starting over…
So I stayed the course through teaching and finished my Bachelors and got my Teaching Credential and headed out into the real world to find that needle in a haystack teaching job! Days, months, and then years went by, along with several hundred applications and still nothing. In the mean time I started working for The Walt Disney Company, although not in a design aspect, but a more customer service one. I became a travel agent making peoples wishes to visit the Disneyland Resort a reality.
Zooming forward a few years again, and Disney announced a new program they would be offering called Disney Aspire. Disney was giving me the opportunity to go back to school and they were paying for it! I was ecstatic when I applied and immediately got my acceptance into Wilmington University to get a Certificate in Graphic Design. Completing one class at a time, my love for art rebounded phenomenally and showed in all of my projects. I got to my final class and completed my last project and was reading the feedback from my professor and I could not believe what she had wrote. She had requested my permission to use my projects in her future classes to showcase to her students. I was beyond surprised and so beside myself that I didn’t know what to say. It was at this moment I knew this was what I was meant to do.
I recently had the opportunity to join the leadership team with the Women@Disney BERG (Business Employee Resource Group) and become one of their Lead Graphic Designers. I have been able to contribute designs to the team in many different aspects whether it be for a specific Pillar, or for the typical biweekly newsletter. I am bringing my love for design to this volunteer position and am continuing to network and collaborate with an amazing team of Women within the Disney Community.
I have been searching for the company that will give me the opportunity to showcase my love of art and design, and help me grow my knowledge further. In the mean time I continue to be a hardworking wife and a mom to two amazing and wonderful kids that are absolutely my world and help inspire me everyday. So here I am showcasing all the wonderful projects I have created in my classes, along with designs that I created for my department at The Walt Disney Company, and the Woment@Disney BERG as well as the personal ones I was asked to do for my family and friends for various events.
I hope you enjoy taking a peek at my journey through design and I hope you continue your journey with me by going through my designs on my following pages.
